This advanced 5-day training program equips Chevron Nigeria Limited’s technical workforce—including electrical engineers, reliability engineers, and substation technicians—with the competence to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and digitally integrate Medium Voltage (MV) and High Voltage (HV) switchgear systems.

Aligned with Chevron’s COEM competency framework, the program emphasizes:

Course Overview (Day-by-Day)

DAY 1: MV/HV Switchgear Overview in Chevron Facilities

Theoretical Sessions:

  • MV/HV configurations in Escravos, FPSO, and GTL facilities

  • Single Line Diagrams (SLD) and system fault studies

  • RMU & GIS switchgear overview

  • Standards: IEC, IEEE, NERC, Chevron-specific

  • LOTO, arc flash boundaries, PPE compliance

Hands-On:

  • Walkthrough of SF₆, VCB, and RMU panels

  • LOTO device application & permit-to-work simulation

  • Interpretation of SLD on actual plant layout


DAY 2: Detailed Components & Breaker Mechanism

Theoretical Sessions:

  • Panel architecture: compartments & barrier systems

  • Breaker components: coils, interlocks, gearboxes

  • Anti-pumping relays, auxiliary contacts, limit switches

  • CT/PT applications: accuracy class, polarity, ratio testing

  • Switchgear busbar types and insulation classification

Hands-On:

  • Manual trip/close of VCB

  • CT/PT wiring, polarity, and ratio verification

  • Busbar connection torque & insulation inspection

  • Interlock validation: mechanical & electrical


DAY 3: SCADA, PLC, and Digital Monitoring

Theoretical Sessions:

  • Introduction to smart switchgear & digital substations

  • SCADA system structure and communication flow

  • PLC ladder logic for switchgear control and interlocks

  • Protocols: Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850

  • Alarm mapping and I/O configuration

Hands-On:

  • Develop PLC ladder logic (case-based)

  • Connect HMI to PLC for breaker control

  • SCADA alarm setup (trip/fault simulation)

  • SCADA-PLC integration with Factory I/O


DAY 4: Relay Protection Using GE Multilin Relays

Theoretical Sessions:

  • ANSI codes: 50, 51, 87, 27, 59, 74 and protection philosophies

  • GE Multilin 750, 489, 850 settings and configuration

  • Event logging, time stamping, and fault analysis

  • Relay misoperation causes (CT saturation, noise, harmonics)

  • Peer relay coordination and load balancing

Hands-On:

  • Configure settings for OC/EF/U/V/Busbar protection

  • Inject test currents and verify trip operation

  • Extract/analyze event & trip logs via EnerVista

  • Simulate backup relay coordination


DAY 5: Condition-Based Maintenance & Final Evaluation

Theoretical Sessions:

  • Chevron’s preventive vs. predictive maintenance workflows

  • CBM tools: PD, IR thermography, DGA

  • Testing protocols: insulation, contact resistance, SF₆ density

  • Chevron failure case studies & lessons learned

  • Digital switchgear and eco-efficient technologies

Hands-On:

  • Perform insulation & contact resistance tests

  • Conduct IR scans with FLIR cameras

  • VCB mechanical cycle count analysis

  • Final integration test: SCADA + Relay + VCB

  • Troubleshooting exam (simulated faults)


Assessment & Certification

  • Daily practical checklists tracked via Trainhub

  • Final exam: 40% theory / 60% hands-on

  • Chevron-compliant certification issued via Trainhub & HRM Portal
