Overview

This course will take the participants through different types of exercises individually and/or in small groups to improve their ability to safely and competently perform torquing and tensioning of bolts as well as shimming are achieved. It is designed to provide practical training in bolt torquing, tightening and shimming techniques and using hand and power tools.

In addition, the knowledge gained in this course will help participants understand how to dismantle, remove and replace components correctly to minimise the leaks and safety concerns associated with incorrectly bolted flanges. It will give an overview of the different types of torque and tensioning equipment and how each should be used.

Materials Provided

A workbook and various supplementary handouts (Soft Copy Workbooks and Handouts option available)

Training Focus

Upon completion of the course the participant would have obtained the following competencies:

  • Select technical manuals and documentation for bolt tightening and shimming tasks to be performed under supervision
  • Safely operate specialized tools used for bolt tightening and shimming
  • Suitably fill out appropriate checklists when working on rotating equipment

Objectives

After completing this course, the participant will learn

  • how to find documentation applicable to torquing, tensioning and shimming
  • the skills in using torque wrenches correctly to tighten bolts
  • the skills in inspecting, assembling/dismantling and adjusting the hydraulic torque and tensioning tools
  • the skills in using hydraulic torque and tensioning tools correctly to tighten bolts using the two-stage bolt tightening procedure
  • the skills in inspecting, measuring and filling in checklist as part of shimming
  • Know how to use shimming tools for filling air gaps by following the  applicable procedure
